arts and entertainment news update

The network of Moscow's Art Galleries has been formed only recently, during the so-called "postperestroika" period. However, the same network has managed to establish a strong control over the Russian art market, representing the variety of the art life in this country. How many art galleries are there in Moscow? Even an expert could hardly find a proper answer. Many galleries come into life and vanish quickly, leaving the space for others. Thus, the number of art galleries, being around 100, changes all the time.

At the same time, there are art galleries in Moscow, which have already deserved stable popularity in the world of arts. In the first place, this is M'ARS (32 Malaya Filyovskaya ul., tel.: 146-2029, open 12 p.m.- 8 p.m., except Mondays), the first private independent commercial gallery in Russia. MAR'S Gallery cooperates fruitfully with over three thousand artists representing various art movements and schools. Meanwhile, there is one common feature uniting all these artists, i.e. metaphysical, mystic perception of the world and the art. Metaphysics, this is the main criterion used by MAR'S Gallery for its collection and for the future museum of the modern art, which is being currently established on the basis of the unique collection of MAR'S Gallery. However, there are some other art galleries in Moscow, which compete successfully with MAR'S Gallery in collecting the works of popular modern artists. These are such galleries as:

("Moscow's Palette", 35/28 Povarskaya ul., tel.: 291-1124, open 11 a.m.- 7 p.m., except Mondays), "Pan-Dan" (doesn't have permanent exhibition, reference tel.: 267-0320), "Moskovskaya Kollektsiya" ("Moscow's Collection", Shchetininsky Per., 10, 238-3968, preliminary arrangement required),

("Together", tel.: 203-9108 ). To some extent, these galleries have already excelled MAR'S Gallery in the variety of their collections. Each gallery has its own, peculiar image. For example, the "Moscow's Palette" gallery is the initiator of extremely interesting exhibition projects famous for their serious scientific approach.

There are some other art galleries representing the undoubtedly interesting collections of works, which represent the creative activity of artists belonging to the Moscow's school only. These are such galleries as:

(38 Arbat ul., 241-1267, open daily, except Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

    (Manezhnaya Square.,1, 202-8252, from 12 ti 7 p.m., except Sundays).

(5, Vosdvizhenka ul., 298-6563, from 11 a.m. ti 7 p.m., except Sundays) The collection displayed here represents a wider range of paintings, graphics, the works of decorative and applied arts from Russia and the countries of the near abroad.

(Exhibition in the Central House of Artists, 230-1161, open daily, except Mondays and Thursdays, from 11 a.m. ti 6 p.m.) and "Sart" (Krasin St. 27, building 2, 251-9817 ,open daily, except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.) art galleries are aimed at reviving the old names and discovering the new ones in the Russian province.

Some art galleries, while having their own interesting collections, organise the art exhibitions displaying the works of the masters "from the first list". These are mainly such galleries as :

("The House of Nashchokin", Vorotnikovsky Per. 12, 299-4774, open daily, except Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

(Solyanka St. 1/2, 921-5572, open daily, except Mondays and Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
